To begin, Wasteland 3 players that do not have any party members with a single point put into Animal Whisperer, which is all that is required to recruit Major Tomcat by way of conversation, can use a cigarette. While this may sound both strange and cruel, offering the cat a smoke is enough to bring him into the fold, and it is advisable to do exactly that, as Major Tomcat is surprisingly powerful in combat.

Indeed, this Animal Companion will happily join a fight if he is recruited to a squad in Wasteland 3, and his claws can deal quite a lot of damage. Major Tomcat is certainly not unstoppable, though, as it possible for him to die. While this not extremely likely to occur in the earliest stages of the game, things can get dangerous for the cat as players progress through this acclaimed RPG, and fans that do not want Major Tomcat to end up dead may wish to leave him in a safe location when stronger enemies start to appear.

To do this on a PS4 or Xbox One controller, players should press L3/LS, target the cat, and then select the dialog option that dismisses him. Notably, Major Tomcat will stay at the location where he is left, allowing players to come back and visit him, and keeping the cat at Ranger HQ is a good way to guarantee that he is easy to find later in a playthrough.

Numerous Wasteland 3 reviews have praised the title for its humor and focus on giving players meaningful choices, and both of these things can be seen in Major Tomcat. Without question, there is something perversely amusing about a cigarette-loving cat, and the fact that fans have to decide if they will risk his life for some additional damage makes this companion more than just a punchline. On that note, hopefully players will have found this guide before Major Tomcat has died, and they can get him safely stowed at their bases.

Wasteland 3 is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
