Not only did the 23-year-old forward score two goals in the Colorado Avalanche’s 5-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes after missing 16 games with a head injury, but both goals came on the same penalty kill.
The first one came just 12 seconds into the kill as Compher beat Coyotes goalie Antti Raanta with a wrist shot to put the Avalanche up 1-0.
Compher’s second goal came with 23 seconds remaining on the Coyotes’ power play. After intercepting a pass in the Avalanche’s zone, he led a breakaway and was in all alone on Raanta as he scored his fifth goal of the season.
The third-year NHLer became the 20th player since 1933 and the fourth player in the last 15 years to score two short-handed goals in less than two minutes.
The Avalanche (12-6-4) have 28 points in 22 games this season after the win and are now in third place in the Central Division.
