With the score tied at 3-3, the Capitals were called for a too many men on the ice penalty 1:21 into overtime. Less than two minutes later, Point took advantage of the power play.
With just under two minutes remaining in the period, Nikita Kucherov dropped off a pass to Steven Stamkos, who immediately sent it back to Kucherov. Kucherov then fired a slap shot, which deflected off of Point and into the back of the net to give Tampa Bay the 4-3 victory.
Earlier in the game, Kucherov scored a goal with 9:14 left in the third period to tie the score.
The win moved the Lightning to 2-1-0 on the year.
